Every year for Valentine's Day, I try to make my kids a little gift. The night before Valentine's Day, I'll leave it somewhere that they will see the surprise first thing in the morning.
This year, I decided to make heart ornaments. As the idea was coming together, I realized this would be a perfect project to do with my kids! They are always excited to sew with me, and I always enjoy seeing their creativity come to life through sewing. My kids really had so much fun making these and felt so proud to be able to do it without much help. They are already planning to make more for their teachers as gifts.
These heart ornaments are a perfect quick gift for teachers, kids, galentines, or anyone to whom you want to show your love and appreciation.
This project uses the same heart template as my scrappy heart coasters. You can download it below.
Materials
-
- (2) Fabric scraps roughly 5" x 5"
- (1) Batting scrap roughly 5" x 5"
- Heart template (Click to download the perfect size heart template for this project!)
- 8.5" piece of ribbon/lace/cord to be the ornament loop
- Coordinating thread
- Pinking shears
- Heat erasable pen
- Sewing machine
- Iron
- Sewing clips
- Cut out the heart template. Using the heat erasable pen, trace the outline of the heart on the right side of one of your fabric pieces.
- Layer the batting in between both pieces of fabric. Both fabric pieces should have right sides facing out and wrong sides touching the batting.
- Take the 8.5" piece of ribbon, or whatever you want to use for the loop (I'm using rick rack), and place each end under the first layer of fabric so that the ribbon is coming out of the top of each hump of the heart. You can measure to make sure they are perfectly centered on each hump, or you can just eyeball it like I did. You want to have about 1/2" of ribbon under the drawn line of each hump. Clip both ends of the ribbon in place.
- Clip around the edges of the rest of the square to keep everything in place.
- Sew ON the drawn outline of the heart all the way around, backstitching at the beginning and end. Be sure to keep the ribbon loop out of the way as you sew.
- Use a hot iron to remove the pen marks of the heart outline.
- Use pinking shears to trim around the whole heart about 1/4" away from the stitching. When you trim the top near the loop, you will have to pull down the ribbon and trim the front fabric. Then pull the ribbon to the other side to trim the back fabric and batting. Be careful that you don't accidentally cut off the ribbon. (This is the part with which my kids needed the most help, so if you are doing this with little ones, keep that in mind!)
- Your handmade Valentine ornament is complete! Give as a Valentine gift, hang it on a doorknob or leave it as a sweet surprise for a loved one to find!
These little hanging hearts are so sweet and quick, you can make one for everyone you love this Valentine's Day!
