Valentine's Day is just around the corner and I have the perfect scrappy project for you! I'm going to show you how to make these adorable scrappy heart coasters. These are so fast and fun that I bet you can't make just one!
Materials
- Fabric scraps, including two pieces at least 5" x 5"
- Batting scrap at least 6" x 6"
- Iron-on adhesive, such as HeatnBond Lite
- Heart template (Click to download the perfect size heart template for this project!)
- Coordinating thread
- Scissors
- Pen or pencil
- Sewing machine
- Iron

For these coasters you can have either a scrappy heart with a single piece background, or a scrappy background with a single piece heart. Or try one of each type!
For the scrappy heart, you'll need to piece enough scraps together to fit the heart template, roughly 4" x 4".
For the scrappy background, piece enough scraps together to be about 6" x 6".
Scrappy pieces can be sewn together in any way you like: Sew them randomly together, or in strips, squares, whatever. You don't even have to precut anything. Just take those scraps as they are and piece them together! Some examples are at the bottom of this page. For this one, I sewed strips together to make the background.

Take your background piece, scrappy or not, layer it right side up on top of your batting. Pin or hold in place. Quilt as desired. Wavy lines or a crosshatch are good options! I also like to change my stitch length to 3.5 when quilting.
- Trim to 5” x 5”.
- Take one of your larger scraps and trim to 5" x 5" (this is the back of the coaster). Place it right sides together with your quilted square. Pin or clip in place.
- Sew a ¼” seam around all sides, leaving a 2.5” opening on one side for turning.
- Clip the corners, then turn the square right sides out, being sure to poke out those corners nice and sharp. A turning tool or pencil will work well. Be careful not to poke a hole.
- Topstitch around all four edges with a ⅛” seam, closing the turning hole. Backstitch at the beginning and end.
- Prepare your heart: Take the piece you want for your heart, scrappy or not, and on the wrong side apply the HeatnBond according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Use the heart template and a pen or pencil to trace a heart on the paper side of the HeatnBond and cut out the heart.
- Peel the paper off the back and center the heart on your coaster. Fuse into place with an iron.
- Topstitch the heart into place. This is a great opportunity to try a fun stitch, if your machine has them. I like the look of a classic blanket stitch. For best results, remember to stitch slowly around those curves!
Voilà! You have made a super sweet Valentine’s Day coaster! These make great gifts and decorations. I made several of these a few years ago and sent them to my mom and sisters as Galentine’s Day presents. One of them hung it up on her fridge with a clip magnet and it looked so cute!
