Prickly Pear Jam

Prickly Pear Jam

My newest pattern, Prickly Pear Jam, is now available! Find it here.

This pattern obviously gets its name from the desert plant that inspired it! I grew up in Southeast Arizona surrounded by all kinds of different cacti. Now I live in New Mexico and although there are no saguaros here, there are still lots of prickly pear. They are a dear and constant friend (as long as you don't get too close! 😉). The photo above was taken at one of my family's favorite summer hiking trails.

Prickly pears have wide, flat pads that are stacked and layered. Their edges are dotted with little spines and when they bloom, it’s all fiery oranges, yellows, or hot pinks. In late summer, the fruits are deep magenta, juicy, and can be made into several yummy treats including jam- hence the name!

Prickly Pear Jam comes in 3 sizes: Mini, Baby, and Throw. The Baby and Throw sizes include a border, while the Mini does not.

Mini 19" x 25"

This size makes a wonderful wall hanging or table topper!

Baby 43" x 55"

The baby size is perfect for a baby to snuggle as they grow! It's a bit larger than a typical baby quilt, which means it's great for kids too!

Throw/Twin 65" x 83"

The throw is generous enough to nicely fit a twin bed and is the perfect size for sharing cuddles!

My cover quilt is made from Maywood Studio's Shadow Play fabrics in Salmon, Peony Pink, Tumeric, & Antique Cream and Kimberbell Solids in Caribbean Sea & Coconut Cream.

Fabric Requirements

Something really fun is that Fabric D (the cornerstones in the sashing) can be its own fabric, but using leftovers of Fabric C (HSTs) or Fabric E (border/sashing) also looks great! An example of this is the Baby size in this post. The orange triangles are the same as the sashing cornerstones.

For what it represents, this pattern is near and dear to my heart. I hope you enjoy making it and I can't wait to see how you bring it to life!
