With the Two Peas Quilt Along just finishing its first month, I thought I would share a bit about this block and how it came to be.

In 2024, I was honored to be one of the Maywood Makers for Maywood Studio. I was in a group with eleven other wonderfully kind and talented creatives, and we worked on various assigned projects throughout the year.
At the close of our term together, we were asked to make two 12" star blocks that would pair well with one another, and which we would mail to Maywood to be part of a unified project. Each maker was sent a box of scraps in a specific colorway, with which to make the blocks. We maintained freedom over the design of the star block, and were told we could use as many or as few different fabrics in our blocks as we wanted.
My box arrived and it was, to my delight, mainly tans, creams, and whites. I am a big fan of neutrals, so this was perfect for me.

I've always loved a classic sawtooth star, so I knew I wanted to have one in my block. I broke out my grid sketchbook, started doodling, and eventually came up with what would later be name the Two Peas block! A little bit of shading, and I was immediately happy with the inverse element of the two blocks.

After sorting through the box of fabric scraps and their sizes, I ended up going with a single background fabric paired with various scraps for one block. The second block would be switched, so that the scraps would be the background. The scrappy look also allowed me to showcase a lot of different prints from the curated scrap box.
The sister blocks were made and shipped off to Maywood Studio. It wasn't until later that we found out what they became...
One block was sewn into a quilt, along with a block from each of the other Maywood Makers, and was displayed at the 2025 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in Oregon! Can you find my block?
The other block was mailed back to me, quilted and bound. It now resides above my sewing desk where I get to admire it all the time.
This pattern is close to my heart and I am happy to say that it is now available as a free pattern when you
